So, I have decided I want to start a collection of every wrestling Pay-Per-view from the major American promotions. That would be NWA/WCW, WWF/E, ECW, & TNA. Also, I will be doing the UFC PPVs, eventually. So, I will then give my assessment of the shows. So, I hope you enjoy, and decide to obtain some of these great events. If you want a copy of any show I talk about, let me know. I'll do it for a small fee lol.
NWA Starrcade '83 was the 1st wrestling PPV in history. It had a great Main Event featuring NWA Champion, Harley Race vs. Ric Flair in a Steel Cage match. It wasn't one of the 60-minute classics i expected, but it was quite entertaining. Ric Flair won, gaining the 2nd of his record 17 World titles.
Another one that sticks out was a Dog Collar Match between NWA United States Champ, Greg Valentine & Roddy Piper. Similar to a Strap Match, the combatants were chained to each other by the neck. The opening neck tug of war was tight. Piper ended up winning in this non-title match.
After doing some research, I found out that one the Assassins was Hercules Hernandez. Some of you younger fans won't know who that is, but he was a Batista-like muscle man from the 80s. Never had the success of Batista though.
I also saw Abdullah the Butcher take on Carlos Colon. Abdullah was one of the original Hardcore wrestlers from my recollection. And, Carlos is the father of Carlito & Primo Colon. They had a good match.
I saw Kevin Sullivan in tag team action. Bob Orton Jr.& Dick Slater vs. Mark Youngblood & Wahoo McDaniel. And, Ricky Steamboat & Jay Youngblood vs. Jack & Jerry Brisco for the NWA Tag Team Titles.
I won't give away all of the results, so that you may enjoy the show, but it was good for a 1st-time happening. This was also before the time of 'finishers' so some of the endings are anti-climatic.
Overall Rating: ** out of 5.
